The father of the slain U.S. ambassador to Libya is speaking up about the political exploitation of his son?s death. The remarks come as criticism of the Republican Party escalates for turning the terrorist attacks in Libya on September 11 into a cudgel directed against Obama.
Jan Stevens, the father of Ambassador Chris Stevens, told Bloomberg Sunday that ?it would really be abhorrent to make this into a campaign issue.? Jan Stevens continued, telling the news agency that ?the security matters are being adequately investigated...We don?t pretend to be experts in security. It has to be objectively examined. That?s where it belongs. It does not belong in the campaign arena.?
Similar sentiment, though more sharply political, was voiced by Obama campaign aides on the Sunday morning talk shows. As Salon?s Alex Halperin notes , ?on Sunday morning talk shows Obama campaign senior advisor Robert Gibbs and senior campaign strategist David Axelrod accused the Romney camp of exploiting the tragedy for political gain.? The attacks in Benghazi figured prominently during the vice-presidential debate between Paul Ryan and Joe Biden.
And earlier today on cable news, the question of politicizing Stevens? death was brought up two separate times to top Romney surrogate Rudy Giuliani. In an appearance on CNN, as Think Progress reported , ?the former New York City mayor argued that the administration is purposely delaying investigations into the incident until after the election to ?cover up? its own failures.?
Giuliani went even further on Fox News. After host Bill Hemmer asked Giuliani about the claim that ?Romney is doing his best to exploit this,? Giuliani said, ?He should be exploiting it. I mean, there is real chance, there is a cover-up here.?
