BREAKING: Dallas County OKs health insurance for domestic partners

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins

The gay and straight domestic partners of Dallas County employees will soon be eligible for a $300 monthly subsidy from the county to help pay for health insurance.

The County Commissioners Court voted 3-2 along party lines Tuesday morning to offer the subsidy to employees who have same- or opposite-sex domestic partners who do not have insurance through other means.?The subsidy will be equal to the amount the county contributes to an employee?s health insurance.

County Judge Clay Jenkins, and Commissioners Dr. Elba Garcia and John Wiley Price, who comprise the court?s Democratic majority, voted in favor of offering the domestic partner subsidy. Republican Commissioners Mike Cantrell and Maurine Dickey voted against it.

Jenkins and Garcia, who spearheaded the initiative, had initially hoped to offer domestic partner benefits through the Public Employee Benefits Cooperative, a multi-county partner agency, but other members ? including Denton and Tarrant counties ? would not allow it.

Those who enroll in Dallas County?s subsidy program will have to sign a domestic partner affidavit, and provide two forms of proof that they have lived together for six months, such as a lease agreement or joint bank accounts. Other requirements mandate that partners must be at least 18 and not be married.

The official projected cost is under $100,000 per year ? though based on the experiences of other government entities including Parkland hospital, the actual price tag is likely to be only a fraction of that amount.

Under the plan, Dallas County becomes the third county in Texas to offer DP benefits after Travis County and El Paso County. The city of Dallas has offered domestic partner benefits since 2004.

More to come ?

GOP groups invest in Neb., NM Senate races

(AP) ? A Republican-leaning outside group is investing in Nebraska's suddenly tighter Senate race, looking to shore up Republican Deb Fischer as she tries to turn back Democrat Bob Kerrey's bid to return to the Senate.

American Crossroads, the group organized by Republican operative Karl Rove, is spending $420,000 on the race and will unveil an ad on Wednesday. Republicans and Democrats say the race has narrowed since recent polls showed Fischer with a double-digit lead in the GOP-leaning state.

"At the end of the day, the U.S. Senate can't afford people like Bob Kerrey," said Nate Hodson, a spokesman for American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS.

Kerrey has been airing an ad that criticizes Fischer and her husband for suing an elderly couple and neighbors for land that the Fischers had used for their cattle. The ad focuses on the 1995 lawsuit and the 104 acres owned by the late Les and Betty Kime. It includes Nebraskans speaking out against Fischer and questioning her character.

Kerrey is a former governor, senator and one-time presidential candidate who was heavily recruited by top Democrats to seek the seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson.

American Crossroads' affiliate, Crossroads GPS, made a $5.3 million ad buy on Tuesday, with new commercials to air in Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio and Virginia ? all competitive races ? as well as Maine and New Mexico.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has ended its spending in Maine, where independent and former Gov. Angus King is leading the polls. King is likely to caucus with the Democrats if he wins the election next week. Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe is retiring.

In New Mexico, Democrat Martin Heinrich has maintained a lead over former Republican Rep. Heather Wilson for the seat held by Democratic Sen. Jeff Bingaman, who decided not to seek another term.

Crossroads GPS is investing $512,000 in New Mexico and will unveil its ad on Wednesday.

Self Improvement | ment Soup - A Simple Recipe for Success | The ...

By Aaron Potts -

The trick to self improvement is to put enough of your resources into things that will help your life go where you want it to go, and to minimize the amount of focus given to things that will keep you from making that happen.

It?s a simple concept, but many people apply too much of their focus onto certain areas, while not putting enough of their focus on areas that need more attention. This causes an imbalance that ultimately leads to a lack of confidence, happiness, and overall contentment.

You could break down your life into almost limitless individual compartments that require your attention, although almost everything that you need to focus on will fall under the general umbrella of 3 primary areas: Health, Wealth, and Relationships.

Health ? This obviously includes the health of your physical body, but it also includes your mental health, your level of peace with spirituality or religion, and also your general attitude and outlook on life.

Wealth ? This could mean actual money in the bank or other assets, it could mean job security and prospects, or it could mean something as simple as your level of career satisfaction, and your belief in your chosen career to provide for your needs in the short-term as well as the long-term.

Relationships ? This includes relationships with a partner, spouse, or significant other, it also includes friendships, the desire or ability to spend time with family members, and it could also include your level of contentment with how you deal with co-workers, and even strangers who are met in public.

As we go through life looking to accomplish goals in certain areas, it is very easy and natural to focus on one particular area, especially if we feel a serious lack of success in that area.

For instance, someone who wants to lose weight will probably focus more of their attention on their weight loss efforts, while not giving as much consideration to what is happening with their relationships, or with their finances.

On the flip side, someone who is very focused on building or maintaining a career will often take their relationships as well as their health almost to the point of neglect while they expend almost all of their mental energy on tasks related to their career.

For someone who is absolutely thrilled with their spouse, partner, or significant other, that person will often spend very little time tending to their health, yet they will spend money outside of their means in order to enjoy their relationship to the fullest.

In each of these examples, there is certainly nothing wrong with taking one area of your life and focusing attention on it in order to achieve success, and it is often the case that one or more areas of life are stable enough that they do not need as much attention as the other areas.

However, we live in a society where people tend to take things to the extreme, and the attention that is given to an area of life that is falling behind is often given by taking needed attention away from other areas. We tend to overcompensate in our desire to lose weight, build a career, or have successful relationships, so those areas end up getting more than their fair share of the available resources, and the other areas suffer as a result.

In order to practice the fine art of self improvement you need to recognize that the key to success lies in balancing your resources so that all areas of your life receive enough attention.

Excelling in one area of your life, or even two, but then leaving the third area to fall flat will only set you up for an unbalanced ? and ultimately unhappy ? lifestyle. People who say that they don?t really care very much about one area or another are not really making an accurate statement.

If someone says that they don?t really care about making a lot of money, that may very well be the case. However, that doesn?t mean that money isn?t a part of their life that needs to be factored in. Very few people can make it in the world without at least a minimal means of supporting themselves.

The person who says that they are not really concerned about their health because they think that life is about ?enjoying the ride? may be truthful when making a statement like that. However, that same person who has a heart attack or a stroke as a result of their consistently negative health habits will almost always have a change of heart regarding their level of health.

Someone who claims to not need a partner, or who isn?t interested in relationships with friends or family may truly feel that way. However, when the right type of relationship or social opportunity comes along, they will very likely engage in it because it is something that they can enjoy, or that they feel comfortable with.

Remember, balancing out these three areas of your life does not mean that each area gets an equal share of your attention. Whenever you are making soup, do you put the same amount of every single ingredient into the soup? Of course not.

Balance in life ? or in soup ? does not mean the same amount of every ingredient, but rather in knowing which ingredients need to be added in higher amounts, while lowering the amount of other ingredients.

Take a look at your own life and you will probably see that certain areas are taking up too much of your time and your mental energy, thus throwing off your balance. Redistribute some of your resources, and in so doing, remind yourself that all areas of your life are worthy of your attention!

Gene that's usually bad news loses its punch if you live to your 90s

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? A gene linked to the risk of developing Alzheimer's, heart disease and diabetes becomes less important to quality of life once people hit their 90s, a Mayo Clinic study shows. At that point, good friends and a positive attitude have a bigger impact, the researchers say.

The findings are published this month in the Journal of American Medical Directors Association.

Researchers used the National Institutes of Health-supported Rochester Epidemiology Project, a database of patient records in Olmsted County, Minn., to find people ages 90 to 99 living on their own or in long-term care. The 121 participants completed an interview, a physical exam and a quality-of-life questionnaire. Participants were divided into groups based on their cognitive function, to sort out the effects of age and disease on well-being, and blood samples were taken for genotyping.

Researchers discovered that those who carried the gene in question, known as ApoE4, were no worse off than others in the study.

"We found if people had good physical, intellectual, and emotional well-being, more social connectedness, and if they perceived themselves to have better coping skills, they felt they had better quality of life," says co-author Maria Lapid, M.D., a Mayo Clinic psychiatrist.

"The study shows that the ApoE4 genotype doesn't determine what your quality of life will be, and that, regardless of your gender, environmental factors play a significant role in your physical, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being," she says. "You can have good quality of life regardless of this gene."

The median age of those studied was 93; 87 percent were women. Those reporting poorer quality of life tended to be men, for reasons that are unclear, and people who experienced pain.

The Alzheimer's Association, National Institute on Aging, and Robert H. and Clarice Smith and Abigail Van Buren Alzheimer's Disease Research Program of the Mayo Foundation funded the study.

Insight: Hungary's far-right party gains as it targets Roma

DEVECSER, Hungary (Reuters) - Decades of animosity between Hungarians and ethnic Roma in this small town in western Hungary had attracted little attention until the far-right Jobbik party saw an opportunity to score a few political points.

A protest rally organized by the party, a little after a brawl between a Roma family and some local people, turned into a running street battle that has left the town thoroughly shaken but which Jobbik was able to exploit for its own ends.

It is a strategy that has worked well for Jobbik, a party that once made use of a "Hungarian Guard" of vigilantes dressed in fascist-style uniforms to target the Roma.

Support for Jobbik, or the Movement for a Better Hungary, is strong and the party could well hold the balance of power between the ruling Fidesz party and the left wing opposition after parliamentary elections in 2014.

That could allow Jobbik to wield a decisive influence over the government, pushing pet issues such as a rethink of European Union membership and a realigning of economic ties towards countries of the east.

Recession-hit Hungary may be forced to accept aid from the International Monetary Fund if economic conditions get worse. That would compel the government to introduce unpopular austerity measures and could mean more votes for Jobbik.

Fidesz insiders deny it, but pressure from Jobbik is widely seen as already influencing the government's agenda, pushing it towards unorthodox and widely criticized economic policies.

The conflict between Roma and Hungarians is Jobbik's principal means of achieving the support at the ballot box it needs to push its policies in Budapest.

Fidesz has lost more than a million voters since 2010, the opposition remains weak, and more than half the electorate is undecided. Jobbik meanwhile has retained its base and is the third strongest political force in Hungary.

DEVECSER FLARE-UP

The party is skilled at making national headlines out of local flare-ups, which is what happened in Devecser.

About a third of the 5,000 inhabitants are Roma. They make a living largely from collecting second hand goods in Austria and Germany and selling them at a giant flea market just outside the town. Many local Hungarians take a dim view of the practice.

One day in July, Ferenc Horvath, a stocky Roma furniture dealer, was driving his van along a narrow street when a car blocked his way. He told the driver, who was staying at a nearby house, to move. Words were exchanged and Horvath drove on.

Two days later Horvath's family and friends returned to the house. In circumstances that remain unclear, a bloody fight ensued. Both sides, Roma and Hungarian, used spades and baseball bats, even a knife. A crowd gathered, mostly local Roma.

According to a report by the interior ministry, the police booked 17 people and started an investigation. To some in Devecser that was not enough. They asked for help on a far-right online news portal, and someone also called Jobbik.

The party obliged, and organized a protest to demand better public safety. On posters announcing the event extremist groups were listed alongside Jobbik, raising fears of violence.

According to witnesses and a video recording of the August 5 protest, speakers invoked the darkest periods of Hungarian history. Zsolt Tyirityan, the leader of a group called the "Army of Outlaws", told the crowd to get tough with the Roma, even citing the Nazi idea of Lebensraum, or living space.

"Force demands respect," he bellowed. "What will we show against these people? Only force! There will be no Gypsy Martin Luther King, no Roma Malcolm X, because we will stamp out this phenomenon that wants to eradicate us from our living space!"

Some of the 1,000 protesters then marched to the Roma part of town, threatening people, throwing rocks and yelling insults.

The video shows thugs throwing half-bricks into the yards of Roma houses and the Roma hurling the bricks back. By chance there were no serious injuries.

"They attacked everyone they saw," Ferenc Horvath said a few weeks later at the flea market. "They called us genetic rejects, or worse. People are still scared out of their wits."

Jobbik denied responsibility for the violence. However, Jobbik MP Gabor Ferenczi, who put the protest together, later took credit for an increased police presence in the town.

WOODEN CROSSES

Jobbik registered as a political party in October 2003; by Christmas, it had 2 percent voter support after erecting wooden crosses to protest against the holiday's commercialization.

In September 2006, violent protests erupted when a recording leaked of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany admitting that his Socialist party had lied for years about the state of the economy to gain reelection that year.

Jobbik took to the streets. It campaigned against police brutality, held rallies and began a meteoric rise.

"There was no way to do politics the traditional way any more," Jobbik chairman Gabor Vona said on a 2010 propaganda DVD. "Local chapters, a board, a program ... it was too little."

"It was just before Christmas that year that I came up with the idea of the Hungarian Guard."

Later banned, the Guard was a uniformed voluntary vigilante group that bore a resemblance to the fascists of World War II. Unarmed but belligerent, it helped the party target a new political scapegoat: the Roma.

In October that year, a teacher was lynched by a Roma mob in eastern Hungary, provoking nationwide outrage. Jobbik coined the term "Roma crime" and began to vilify the country's 700,000 Roma as free-loading, lazy, and criminal.

The party insists it only targets criminals, but the public perception is far less nuanced and supporters viewed the Guard as a sort anti-Roma defense force.

The media took up the story, but the critical coverage served only to launch Jobbik into the mainstream.

"We could never have bought the air time to promote Jobbik and fill the ranks of the Guard the way this coverage did," Jobbik executive director Gabor Szabo said in the party video.

Success came in 2009. Jobbik scored 14 percent at European Parliament elections. Then in 2010, it became the third biggest party in Hungary's parliament, polling 17 percent and winning 45 of the 386 seats.

The gains could easily continue in 2014, said historian Rudolf Paksa, an expert on the far-right, who said that in an extreme case the party could get 30-35 percent of the vote.

SUMMER CAMP

At a Jobbik summer camp in Velence, 60 km (40 miles) west of Budapest, about 100 activists gathered this year for a two-day political session and a morale boost by Vona.

"We are normal people in a screwed-up world, even if some see us as screwed-up people in a normal world," Vona told them.

"The Jobbik brand right now is dark, violent and gloomy. We did not paint it dark, but we cannot win a majority like this. We need to refine it to gain a brighter, younger brand."

Most of the audience were barely of voting age, but young people are Jobbik's strongest asset, and its communications strategy is largely built on the internet and its young users.

Jobbik says it has good relations with a far-right web site called Kuruc.info, which features a column called "Gypsy Crime" and often runs pieces by Jobbik leaders.

Some opinion polls suggest Jobbik is already neck-and-neck with Fidesz in the age group below 30.

If Jobbik had its way, Hungary would be a lot harsher on its Roma. It may not be a member of the European Union. And it would definitely not be talking about loans and aid deals with the West, pursuing instead engagement in the Middle East and Asia.

"It was a grave mistake of the post-Communist era to naively tie Hungary's fortunes to the mast of a sinking ship and pursue 100 percent Euro-Atlanticism," Jobbik's foreign policy chief Marton Gyongyosi told Reuters.

Gyongyosi, whose office is decorated with Iranian and Turkish souvenirs, said Hungarians are the descendants of Turkic peoples and should cultivate those ancient ties.

Jobbik has protested against EU membership, even burning the EU flag outside the Union's Budapest offices.

Gyongyosi said the IMF has "bled Hungary dry for decades" through loans and austerity requirements, so Jobbik will call for financing from eastern countries such as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan or China instead of the IMF or EU.

Jobbik also uses anti-Semitic language and some of its deputies espouse such ideas. The party does not embrace this openly but does little to dispel the image.

One Jobbik MP went as far as invoking the centuries-old blood libel - the accusation that Jews used Christians' blood in religious rituals - in a speech in parliament earlier this year.

Fifty U.S. Congressmen then wrote to Prime Minister Orban to complain about anti-Semitism in Hungary.

This compelled Vona to reply, rejecting the charge. But for the liberal members of parliament who sit next to Jobbik deputies, this is empty talk from a party that basically shrugs when it is labeled anti-Semitic.

Tunisian man may be first break in Benghazi attack

One of the first clues the intelligence community had about the perpetrators of the Sept. 11 assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi was when a Tunisian national posted an update on social media about the fighting shortly after it had begun.

The post from Ali Ani al-Harzi, who is now suspected of participating in the attacks, was what helped U.S. intelligence locate him and track him down after he fled Libya for Turkey, according to four U.S. officials familiar with the unfolding investigation.

READ MORE Qatar: Gaza?s New BFF

These people say Turkish officials held al-Harzi for less than a week at the behest of the U.S. government, then sent him to Tunisia. There, he was kept in military custody until last week, when he was transferred to a jail in preparation for a court trial. It?s unclear what role he might have played in the attacks or what he might be charged with. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. intelligence community are working with Tunisian authorities, but there has been no deal yet on whether to send al-Harzi to the U.S. or keep him in Tunisia where he could be charged under the country?s own counterterrorism laws. The Tunisians have also not yet allowed U.S. officials direct access to the suspect.

Al-Harzi is a member of violent extremist networks in North Africa, one U.S. intelligence officer told The Daily Beast. This person added that he was also connected to jihadist organizations in the Middle East and was headed to Syria when he was detained in Turkey.?

The investigation into what happened on the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11 in Benghazi is complicated by a number of factors. It?s an election season, and Republicans have accused Democrats of trying to cover up a terrorist attack and misleading the public. Democrats have countered that Republicans and Mitt Romney have attempted to politicize a national tragedy.

The latest CIA view of the attack sent Friday to Congress says the attack on 9/11 was ?opportunistic? rather than being planned days or weeks in advance. This assessment is based in part on a review of intercepts collected before 9/11 in and around Benghazi. A U.S. intelligence official told The Daily Beast that the review of collected intelligence found ?there was nothing that would have given us some indication that an attack was being planned or imminent.?

READ MORE 12 Killed in Taiwanese Hospital Fire

This resonates with what James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, said earlier this month at an intelligence conference in Orlando known as GEOINT: ?If people do not emit or discuss their behavior, it's hard to find out what they are going to do.?

The CIA?s latest assessment also says once and for all that the assault didn?t start as a protest against an anti-Islam Internet video. In the first eight days following the attacks, the Obama administration cited that video as the primary cause of the assault.

READ MORE China?s Politburo to Drop Mao

Yet the FBI knew there was no protest as early as Sept. 14, according to U.S. officials familiar with the investigation. These people say that?s when FBI agents interviewed four of the five diplomatic security officers who were at the consulate during the attack. The officers were interviewed at Ramstein Airbase in Germany, where they had been evacuated. They told the FBI that there was no protest outside the consulate on 9/11 and that the men who showed up that evening were there to assault the compound.

Information like this ?is ordinarily transferred back to Washington, given to John Brennan in the White House, so the president and White House would be aware of the progress in the investigation,? said Fran Townsend, a former White House homeland security and counterterrorism advisor to President George W. Bush who now serves on the CIA?s external advisory committee.

READ MORE Parliament to Question BBC Chief

It?s unclear when the FBI related this information to the White House, and both the FBI and the White House National Security Council declined to comment for this story. Two U.S. intelligence officials, however, say the FBI?s information didn?t make it into the intelligence community databases used by analysts until Sept. 20.

Innovation Through Acquisition - Business Insider

A critical component of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the U.S. is the mergers and acquisitions market. I?ve sifted through a number of studies and estimates, and it?s safe to say that the vast majority (over 90 percent) of the successful private company exits in 2011 and 2012 have been through company sale or M&A. (IPOs may represent a higher percentage of VC-backed company exits, but remember that only a minuscule proportion of all startups ? even successful ones ? are funded by VCs.)

What makes the M&A ?engine? run, in a real sense, is the creative and innovative people on the big-company side of the fence who are constantly scanning the market for promising startups. Don?t roll your eyes. It?s what you might think of as a conscious?innovation-thought-acquisition strategy.??

Probably?the?prime imperative for Fortune 500 managers is to find areas for revenue and profit growth. But the challenge is to do so without endangering the existing franchise. Too often, the dilemma from the helm looks like this: You know you need to get into a promising new space, but it?s quite unproven and you suspect running two or three concurrent experiments might bleed cash for years. So in a real sense, you can?t afford ? on a quarter-to-quarter income statement basis ? to run too many such risky projects.?

But if you let entrepreneurial startups run the experiments with?their?energy, time and capital ? and let?them?ring out the technology risk and the market risk ? then once a winner appears, you can buy that winner with capital off your balance sheet. The key is often to watch and wait until markets sort out, and business models are proven. Then success acquisitions are often the ones subjected to the most careful and sober-minded competitive and market analysis prior to pulling the trigger.

Innovation-through-acquisition can be a great growth catalyst and has become a crucial complement to internal, organic innovation in a growing number of industries. Let?s look a handful of examples:

Enterprise software vendors ? which ring up $600 billion a year in sales ? are closely following startups in growth areas such as social media for the enterprise and cloud computing to see who?s getting market traction, proving out a grounded business model, and so on ? and then pouncing to acquire the strongest players.?

Just so far in 2012, for instance, Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) has shelled out $1.92 billion for Taleo (an online recruiting platform); $300 million to acquire Vitrue (an enterprise social marketing platform) ? and undisclosed sums for Involver (a social media development platform). ? Collective Intellect (a social media CRM platform) ? and SelectMinds (social recruiting tools).

Also in 2012, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) has plunked down $1.2 billion cash for Yammer (a provider of internal social network platforms for enterprises)? and undisclosed amounts for StorSimple (cloud-based storage)? and MarketingPilot (cloud-based marketing automation).

Even cloud-computing pioneer Salesforce (NYSE: CRM) has now grown to the point where they find it can be more expeditious to buy rather than make; a few months ago, they bellied up to the bar and spent $689 million for Buddy Media (a corporate social media marketing platform similar to Vitrue). ??

But let?s be clear: innovation-through-acquisition is a widely embraced strategy well beyond the traditional tech space as well. Let?s look at a few of diverse examples:?

In April, blood management solutions company Haemonetics (NYSE: HAE) paid $27 million to acquiring Hemerus Medical, thereby adding some innovative blood collection and storage technologies to its portfolio.

In the once-hide-bound publishing space, for instance, two-century-old text publisher John Wiley & Sons?(NYSE: JWA)?recently announced plans to buy online degree services firm Deltak.edu to accelerate its move into online ed. Penguin, meanwhile, committed $116 million in July to buy Author Solutions to strengthen its presence in the self-publishing market.

And in biopharma, meanwhile, Acorda Therapeutics (Nasdaq: ACOR), a commercial-stage drug-development company, acquired Neuronex in February in a deal worth up to $130 million that gave Acorda access to Neuronex?s portfolio of development-stage drug projects. Driven by a similar motivation, Amgen (Nasdaq: AMGN) bought KAI Pharmaceuticals back in April for $315 million to access the company?s high-promise new drug candidates in cardiovascular disease and kidney disease.

M&A teams in big companies are often tiny ? in many cases, we?re talking about a part-time job for a couple of talented folks. But increasingly, corporate leadership sees the benefits of slipstreaming off the risk-taking efforts of entrepreneurs to accelerate into challenging but promising new markets.

And this little number from the long farewell is no exception, lovelies. From the Bride? When Brett and I got engaged, we were really undecided on the location of our wedding. We searched through what felt like hundreds of venues and then finally found the perfect spot in Montaluce Winery & Estates. Brett is from Ohio, and my extended family was coming all the way from South Africa and England, so Montaluce was a perfect special getaway that felt a little bit like a destination wedding.

Our family friend offered to do all of our flower arrangements for the wedding, so our DIY wedding was truly that. We worked together to decide on a color scheme and chose georgia peach as our accent color, since we moved to Atlanta, Georgia from South Africa after I was born and still call it home! Our family and friends all pitched in to make this wedding the beautiful affair that it was. Brett?s brother Ryan designed the gorgeous wedding invitations which also influenced our programs and other paper products. On the wedding day we had a team of people lighting candles, laying out the handmade burlap aisle runner, cleaning lanterns, setting out flower arrangements, decorating the table tops and laying out the bags of almonds on each place setting(a special tradition from South Africa). I collected antique postcards from South Africa through Ebay and Etsy to make our table numbers, which was a surprise for my parents and a little slice of home. Our wedding absolutely would not have happened without the love and care each and every ?worker bee? put into it.

The weather was absolutely perfect (75 degrees in Georgia in June?!) on our wedding day, creating a wonderful backdrop to our candlelit ceremony in the production room of Montaluce. We then ate family-style dinner with the winery sunset as a backdrop and danced under the stars. Altogether, our day was one I will never forget and really was a tribute to all of the hard work that everyone involved put into making it happen. Finally, our photographers have put together an amazing collection of photos that we will have forever to remind us of the day. Chad and Tina of The Long Farewell are genuinely wonderful people who made everyone feel at ease and comfortable all day. We could not have asked for two better people to spend the day capturing our wedding. A million times thank you!

FACT CHECK: Flunking geography, history

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Voters didn't always get the straight goods when President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney made their case for foreign policy and national security leadership Monday night before their last super-sized audience of the campaign. A few of their detours into domestic issues were problematic too.

Romney flubbed Middle East geography. Obama got Romney's record as Massachusetts governor wrong.

At the same time, they injected a little more accuracy into two leading misstatements of the campaign: Romney's claim for months that Obama went around apologizing for America, and the president's assertion, going back to his State of the Union address in January, that the U.S. military's exit from Afghanistan will yield money to rebuild America.

A look at some of their statements and how they compare with the facts:

ROMNEY: "Mr. President, the reason I call it an apology tour is because you went to the Middle East and you flew to Egypt and to Saudi Arabia and to Turkey and Iraq. And by the way, you skipped Israel, our closest friend in the region, but you went to the other nations. And by the way, they noticed that you skipped Israel. And then in those nations, and on Arabic TV, you said that America had been dismissive and derisive. You said that on occasion America had dictated to other nations."

OBAMA: "Nothing Gov. Romney just said is true, starting with this notion of me apologizing. This has been probably the biggest whopper that's been told during the course of this campaign. And every fact checker and every reporter who's looked at it, governor, has said this is not true."

THE FACTS: Romney has indeed repeatedly and wrongly accused the president of traveling the world early in his presidency and apologizing for U.S. behavior. Obama didn't say "sorry" in those travels. But in this debate, Romney at last explained the context of his accusation: not that Obama apologized literally, but that he had been too deferential in his visits to Europe, Latin America and the Muslim world.

Obama said while abroad that the U.S. acted "contrary to our traditions and ideals" in its treatment of terrorist suspects, that "America has too often been selective in its promotion of democracy," that the U.S. "certainly shares blame" for international economic turmoil and has sometimes "shown arrogance and been dismissive, even divisive" toward Europe. Yet he also praised America and its ideals.

___

OBAMA: "What I think the American people recognize is, after a decade of war, it's time to do some nation-building here at home. And what we can now do is free up some resources to, for example, put Americans back to work, especially our veterans, rebuilding our roads, our bridges, our schools."

THE FACTS: If Romney's "apology tour" was a campaign whopper, so has been Obama's repeated claim that ending expensive wars meant the U.S. now has money to spend at home. There is no such peace dividend because the wars were financed largely by borrowing.

Yet Obama, too, watched his words a little more carefully Monday night, with his milder suggestion that "some resources" are freed up. That's a more plausible point, if only because U.S. "resources" include the ability to continue to go deeper in debt, but for the purpose of fixing roads, bridges and the like, instead of for making war.

___

ROMNEY: "Syria is Iran's only ally in the Arab world. It's their route to the sea."

THE FACTS: Iran has a large southern coastline with access to the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. And it has no land border with Syria.

___

ROMNEY: Said that when he was Massachusetts governor, high-school students who graduated in the top quarter "got a four-year, tuition-free ride at any Massachusetts public institution of higher learning."

OBAMA: "That happened before you came into office."

ROMNEY: "That was actually mine, actually, Mr. President. You got that fact wrong."

THE FACTS: Romney was right. The John and Abigail Adams scholarship program began in 2004 when he was governor.

___

ROMNEY on SYRIA: "What I'm afraid of is we've watched over the past year or so, first the president saying, 'Well, we'll let the U.N. deal with it.' And Assad ? excuse me, Kofi Annan ? came in and said we're going to try to have a cease-fire. That didn't work. Then it went to the Russians and said, 'Let's see if you can do something.' We should be playing the leadership role there."

OBAMA: "We are playing the leadership role."

THE FACTS: Under Obama, the United States has taken a lead in trying to organize Syria's splintered opposition, even if the U.S. isn't interested in military intervention or providing direct arms support to the rebels. The administration has organized dozens of meetings in Turkey and the Middle East aimed at rallying Syria's political groups and rebel formations to agree on a common vision for a democratic future after Syrian President Bashar Assad is defeated. And Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton brought dozens of nations together as part of the Friends of Syria group to combine aid efforts to Syria's opposition and help it win the support of as many as Syrians as possible. The U.S. also is involved in vetting recipients of military aid from America's Arab allies like Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Romney is partly right in pointing out Obama's failure to win U.N. support for international action in Syria. But the Friends of Syria group has helped bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid and other forms of assistance to Syrian civilians and the political opposition.

___

OBAMA: "What I would not have had done was left 10,000 troops in Iraq that would tie us down. And that certainly would not help us in the Middle East." THE FACTS: Obama was suggesting that he had never favored keeping U.S. troops in Iraq beyond the December 2011 withdrawal deadline that the Bush administration had negotiated with the Iraqi government. Actually, the Obama administration tried for many months to win Iraqi agreement to keeping several thousand American troops there beyond 2011 to continue training and advising the Iraqi armed forces. The talks broke down over a disagreement on legal immunity for U.S. troops.

___

ROMNEY: "We have an enormous trade imbalance with China, and it's worse this year than last year and it's worse last year than the year before."

THE FACTS: That's true as far as it goes but the imbalance is far from unique to the Obama years. The U.S. has run a trade deficit with China since 1985 and the gap has widened nearly every year since. According to Chinese customs data, Beijing reported a $181.3 billion trade surplus with the United States in 2010. That grew to $202.3 billion last year. The surplus for the first nine months of this year was $161.9 billion, well ahead of the level at this point in 2011.

___

OBAMA: "You are familiar with jobs being shipped overseas because you invested in companies that were shipping jobs overseas. And, you know, that's your right. I mean, that's how our free market works."

THE FACTS: Bain Capital, the private equity company that Romney ran from 1984 to 2001, did invest in several companies that shifted American jobs and operations from the U.S. to China and other foreign nations. In one instance in 1998, Bain bought a 10 percent investment stake in Global-Tech, a Hong Kong firm that used mainland Chinese factories to make toasters and other appliances for U.S. manufacturers that were phasing out American operations and jobs. Romney held full Bain partnership stakes in that deal before the firm sold its holding later that year. Bain also invested in several firms that outsourced to Mexico in the early 2000s, but by then Romney had begun shifting away from Bain to a role running the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. And in almost all of these cases, it remains unclear how much oversight Bain had in the overseas shifts. The Romney campaign has said that Romney's holdings were mostly passive in nature, particularly after he left the firm.

___

ROMNEY: "In the 2000 debates, there was no mention of terrorism."

THE FACTS: There was passing mention of terrorism in the 2000 debates. In the Oct. 17, 2000, debate between Democrat Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush, Gore talked about his work in Congress to "deal with the problems of terrorism and these new weapons of mass destruction." And in the vice presidential debate, Democrat Joe Lieberman defended the Clinton administration's record of preparing the armed forces to "meet the threats of the new generation of tomorrow, of weapons of mass destruction, of ballistic missiles, terrorism, cyber warfare." Romney's larger point, that the U.S. did not anticipate anything on the scale of terrorist threat that existed, is supported by the light attention paid to the subject in the debates.

France: Iran seems on track for nukes by mid-2013

PARIS (AP) ? France's foreign minister says Iran appears on track to reach the ability to produce a nuclear weapon by the first half of next year.

France is one of six countries that have negotiated with Tehran over its nuclear program, which Iran insists is peaceful.

Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told Europe-1 radio Sunday that unspecified experts "have established in an absolutely indisputable way" that Iran has compiled a full array of centrifuges that "apparently will allow the ability to go toward possession of the nuclear weapon by the first half of next year, the end of the first half." He did not elaborate.

Western nations fear Iran may turn its uranium enrichment program toward making weapons, a growing concern as Tehran expands the number of machines it uses to enrich uranium.

Nigeria opens museum to "Afrobeat King" Fela Kuti

LAGOS (Reuters) - When he was alive, Fela Kuti electrified Nigerians and many music lovers the world over with his hip-shaking and strangely hypnotic blend of jazz, funk and West African folk rhythms.

His legendary sexual exploits with dozens of women, marijuana smoking and fearless critiques of Nigeria's then corrupt and oppressive military regime only served to heighten the mystique.

This week Nigeria opened a new museum to the King of Afrobeat, at the start of a week-long annual "Felabration" to mark his 74th birthday on Monday, in the commercial hub Lagos.

"Everybody has a piece of Fela in him. He touched everybody," said the Theo Lawson, the architect who converted Fela's old family house into the government-funded museum.

The house is also a boutique hotel, with a bar and stage.

"We didn't want a museum that closes at night and the life source leaves the building," Lawson explained.

Inside, decorations include brightly colored murals, chic African art, photos from his life and performances, and a wall devoted to the different flamboyant shoes he wore.

His bedroom remains as has been since he died of HIV/AIDS in 1997: a bed, clothes, more shoes, colorful underpants -- often they were all he wore. His electric keyboard has been mounted.

The 'Afrobeat' sound that Fela Kuti concocted in the 1960s mixes bass groves with jazz organ and traditional West African drumming, punctuated by a cacophony of horns and shrill backing vocals by gyrating women in colorful beads.

It still resonates across Lagos from nightclubs, bars and roadside eateries selling grilled meat.

In the late 1970s Fela became a symbol of the struggle against successive military dictators.

"Fela was frustrated. He came back from America full of ideas of Africanism and African unity, but he was talking to a bunch of military despots who just didn't listen," Lawson said.

In 1977 his smash hit "Zombie" infuriated the military by accusing soldiers of being violent, brainless automata. In the same year, around 1,000 soldiers descended on his commune in a rampage in which they burned down the house, cracked his skull and threw his septuagenarian mother out of a window.

Fela's fondness for smoking massive, cone-shaped marijuana "spliffs" on stage and his rejection of Nigeria's two monotheistic religions -- Christianity and Islam -- in favor of traditional Yoruba gods did not endear him to its conservative elites. Neither did the stories of Fela's 27 wives and his free love sex commune.

Even today, "The Shrine", a nightclub where his sons Femi and Seun carry on the tradition of working up eclectic crowds into fits of dancing, are considered risqu? by many.

"This (museum) is a chance for everyone to see for themselves, not follow the myths that being in Fela's house meant you're a hooligan, or a prostitute or all we do is smoke weed," Seun told Reuters in an interview before the opening.

"I grew up here. This house was a house of education."

Fela's sons believe his message -- a call to peaceful rebellion against corrupt elites -- still resonates.

"Corruption is now like a cancer in our society," his eldest son Femi said from the museum's rooftop bar. "Everything will take time. The youth will see this is not the way to go."

One dead, six seriously injured in Arizona bus crash

WILLOW BEACH, Ariz. (AP) ? A charter bus carrying tourists back to Las Vegas from the Grand Canyon crashed on an Arizona highway, killing the driver and injuring more than 20 passengers, six of them seriously, authorities said.

The bus was northbound on Highway 93 on Friday night, nearing the Nevada state line, when the driver suffered a physical problem and lost control, the Arizona highway patrol said. The company that offered the tour said the driver may have suffered a heart attack.

The vehicle hit a ravine, tore up a small hill, and then bounced and lurched over rough terrain for more than 700 feet before stopping, damaging the front end but remaining upright, patrol spokesman Carrick R. Cook said.

"We believe the driver experienced some sort of the medical condition and he just went off the road," the patrol said in a statement. No other vehicles were involved.

All 48 passengers were injured, but 27 of them were walking wounded with mainly bumps and bruises, Cook said.

"The passengers were pretty much bouncing around," he said.

The six most seriously hurt were flown by helicopter to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, while 15 others with less severe injuries were rushed to area hospitals by road.

UMC spokeswoman Danita Cohen said the six were being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, such as broken bones and lacerations. She described them as being mostly over 50 years old.

Cook said most of the passengers appeared to be from Asia or Europe, but he didn't have details.

The passengers were returning to Las Vegas following a trip to the Grand Canyon when the crash occurred.

Tony Fiorini, president of Silver State Trailways, the California-based company bus company that operates tours from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, said the company believes its driver had a heart attack while on the road. "Fortunately, no one else was seriously injured," Fiorini said.

Fiorini declined to release the name or age of the driver and didn't say how long the driver had been with the company. "I'm mainly concern about my driver's family right now," he said.

It was the third time in recent years that a tour bus crash in the area claimed lives.

Two years ago, two people were killed and several others injured in a crash on an area highway. In January 2009, seven people died and 10 were injured when a charter bus carrying a group of Chinese tourists on a return trip from the Grand Canyon crashed on U.S. 93, the main highway leading to Hoover Dam.

Four hours after the crash, the bus was sitting upright about 30 feet off the shoulder of the road.

The highway near the crash site was reduced to one lane of traffic for several hours.

Bombs in market, shootings kill 17 in Iraq

(AP) ? Back-to-back bomb blasts in a crowded Baghdad market near a revered Shiite shrine and a string of shootings targeting government officials killed at least 17 people Saturday.

The bombings, which happened within about a minute of each other, appeared be aimed at intimidating Iraq's Shiites, who are a frequent target of Sunni insurgents. Police said at least 11 people were killed and 35 were wounded.

The blasts struck about 500 meters (yards) from a shrine where two revered imams are buried, damaging nearby shops and buildings, according to police, who confirmed the casualty figures.

The attacks came as many shoppers were out buying new clothes in anticipation of the Eid al-Adha holiday, which begins in about a week.

"It was a busy time for shopping, so there were a lot of people around," said Ahmed Naseer, the owner of a stationary shop nearby. "When I came out, I saw burning carts and merchant stalls, and children crying and women screaming out of fear. The whole place was full of panic."

Earlier in the day, gunmen opened fire on a police patrol in the Shiite neighborhood of al-Shaab, killing two policemen and wounding another.

Authorities also said gunmen shot dead a police lieutenant colonel who worked with the State Identity Directorate late Friday in the capital's Karradah district.

Hospital officials confirmed the deaths in the Baghdad attacks.

Near the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, gunmen attacked a police checkpoint and killed three officers, according to two police officials.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

Gunmen also shot and killed a prison official in a drive-by-shooting during the morning rush hour in eastern Baghdad, said Justice Ministry spokesman Haider al-Saadi.

Violence has ebbed in Iraq since the peak of the bloodletting in 2005-2008, but insurgents still frequently attack predominantly Shiite areas, government officials and security forces in an attempt to undermine the Shiite-led government.

Saturday's attacks marked Iraq's deadliest day since Sept. 30, when a string of coordinated blasts that hit Shiite neighborhoods and struck at Iraqi security forces left at least 26 dead.
