Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 announced, joins the Android tablet line-up with low-resolution 7-inch screen

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 announced, joins the Android tablet lineup with a 7inch screen

If an 8-inch stylus-enabled Galaxy Tablet wasn't your cup of tea, perhaps Samsung's new 7-inch model will hit your screen-size sweet spot. The Galaxy Tab 3 has gone official and the third iteration of the company's first Android tablet arrives with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 8GB or 16GB of storage (with expansion up to 64GB), a 3- and 1.3-megapixel camera array and a substantial 4,000mAh battery. That 7-inch WSVGA (1,024 x 600) TFT display suggests it's likely to be a keenly-priced slate, although we're still waiting to hear on specifics. Samsung's loaded up the Galaxy Tab 3 with Android 4.1 and says that the WiFi version will launch "globally" in May, while an incoming 3G model (no LTE at this point, but it'll be able to make calls) will follow in June.

95% Blancanieves

All Critics (44) | Top Critics (13) | Fresh (41) | Rotten (2)

Most films are experiences to be ignored or at best forgotten. "Blancanieves" is a little classic to be treasured.

It is a full-bodied silent film of the sort that might have been made by the greatest directors of the 1920s, if such details as the kinky sadomasochism of this film's evil stepmother could have been slipped past the censors.

Blancanieves, which won 10 Goyas (Spain's equivalent of the Oscars) and was a smash hit in its native Spain, has traces of a kinky undertone and an uncommon willingness to embrace the darkness inherent in this fairy tale.

As if bewitched, the legend of Snow White is transferred to Seville in the early twentieth century and transformed into high melodrama.

Sensuous, mischievous, hotblooded retelling of the old Teutonic fairy tale.

This gorgeous silent film is an unexpected gift from the gods of pure cinema.

A completely enchanting fairy tale about the vicissitudes of fate, in live action and glorious black and white.

The fun in the Spanish "Blancanieves" is the way it plays with our expectations.

May not have much depth to its characters or particular surprise, but its lovely depiction of family's ability to harm and mend has the flair of flamenco and the sorrow of opera.

No, "Blancanieves" isn't subtle, but it's an unforgettable time at the movies.

Inspired filmmaking steeped in the imagery of silent film history, a dark Iberian strain of Roman Catholicism and the magic of fairy tales.

... lusty and heartfelt, fiery flamenco and spirited country jig. Don't go expecting a Disney-fied fable. Berger seasons with S&M and the kind of macabre touches you'd expect in vintage Browning or Bunuel.

If not for some faintly disturbing imagery and a pleasingly feminist heroine, you could mistake this for a movie actually made in the 1920s (and even those two factors weren't utterly unknown then).

A loving tribute to European silent films of the 1920s; a reminder that cinema need not be constrained by words.

By the time the film arrives at its grand theatrical finale, you're almost prepared for Berger's last great twist. Almost.

this beautifully shot and imaginatively told fairy tale should be seen my many, but only a few will likely get to enjoy it. This is a shame for the audience it is intended for.

This film is simply gorgeous, pure beauty on film, a vision that leaves you breathless and reeling.

Much of the film's emotion is conveyed by Alfonso de Vilallonga's music, which celebrates Spain with uptempo guitar and flamenco when it isn't tipping its hat to Bernard Herrmann during a scene inspired by Hitchcock.

A visual feast, a musical masterpiece and a heartbreaking romance.

The actors are well-chosen and make you forget the lack of dialogue, especially with the artful support of Alfonso de Vilallonga's music.

The silent trappings seem like a gimmick when employed in 2013, but the story's impact is never dulled.

Oil above $94 on US data, hope of EU rate cut

The price of oil rose above $94 per barrel Monday as positive U.S. economic data added to optimism for a rate cut in Europe.

By midday in New York, benchmark crude for June delivery was up 90 cents to $93.90 a barrel, after earlier reaching $94.39.

The U.S. government said Americans spent more in March as their incomes went up. And pending home sales hit their highest level in three years. Traders also think the European Central Bank will cut its benchmark interest rate from the current record low of 0.75 percent to 0.50 percent, in a further attempt to turn around the economy there.

A weaker dollar also helped boost oil prices by making crude priced in dollars cheaper for traders using other currencies. On Monday, the euro was up to $1.3082 from $1.3065 late Friday in New York.

Drivers are still shelling out fewer dollars at the gas pump compared with a year ago. The national average for a gallon of regular is $3.50, compared with $3.82 on this date last year.

Brent crude, which is used to price oil from the North Sea used by many U.S. refiners, was up 24 cents to $103.40 on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline fell 1 cent to $2.82 a gallon.

? Heating oil was flat at $2.86 a gallon.

? Natural gas added 13 cents to $4.36.

From Idea To Development, A Few Hours In At The TechCrunch Disrupt NY Hackathon

hackcrowd12The hacking has begun. As I write this, participants of the Disrupt NY Hackathon have been working for about six hours on what they are going to show us onstage tomorrow. We talked with a few of them to see how motivated they are. Full of energy, most of them are still enthusiastic about the long and (mostly) sleepless night ahead of them. It takes dedication to build something awesome in fewer than 24 hours, but our fearless hackers seem up to the task. Teams are now working hard to turn their ideas into a working demo. Everybody knows what he or she has to do for his or her team. In other words, the technical and hard part now begins. They will develop, iterate, make compromises and deliver. But after a few minutes talking to us, developers want to get back to what they were doing. Even after only a few hours in, there is not much time left, given the ambitious ideas of some of those teams. Enthusiasm is contagious, so we can’t wait to talk to them again in the coming hours. Dow, S&P close at record highs as Wall Street rallies

By Ryan Vlastelica

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks climbed 1 percent on Wednesday, with both the Dow and S&P 500 ending at historic highs as cyclical shares led the way higher for a second straight day.

The S&P 500 finally joined the new all-time intraday high club, surging past a record set on October 11, 2007. The index has struggled to breach the level of 1,576.09 for the past several weeks, but broke above it on Wednesday to rise as high as 1,589.07. The Dow also hit another intraday milestone, rising as high as 14,826.66.

"The path of least resistance for the market remains higher, and despite some mixed economic data, investors are concluding that stocks remain a better place to be than risk-free assets," said Jim McDonald, chief investment strategist at Chicago-based Northern Trust Global Investments, which has about $760 billion in assets under management.

Gains were broad, with all but two of the S&P 500's 10 primary sectors up more than 1 percent. More than three-fourths of stocks traded on the Nasdaq ended higher, while 73 percent of New York Stock Exchange-listed shares did.

In another encouraging sign, volume was higher than it has been recently, with about 6.24 billion shares changing hands on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and NYSE MKT. However, volume remained below the daily average so far this year of about 6.36 billion shares.

With the day's gains, major indexes are up about 10 percent for the year, but many investors viewed the strength in cyclicals - groups closely tied to the pace of economic growth - as a sign that the rally still has staying power. The Dow Jones Transportation Average, viewed as a leading indicator for the broader market, rose 1.8 percent.

Tech was the day's strongest group, with the S&P technology sector index <.splrct> up 1.8 percent. The group was lifted by strong results at Adtran Inc , which jumped 14 percent to $22.46 and boosted the shares of its peer companies. JDS Uniphase Corp added 4.9 percent to $13.99 while Juniper Networks Inc rose 4.7 percent to $18.84.

The sector also got a boost from Facebook Inc , which jumped 3.7 percent to $27.57.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 128.78 points, or 0.88 percent, to 14,802.24 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> climbed 19.12 points, or 1.22 percent, to 1,587.73. The Nasdaq Composite Index shot up 59.40 points, or 1.83 percent, to close at 3,297.25.

The day marked the best session for both the Dow and the S&P 500 since February 27, and the best for the Nasdaq since January 2. The Nasdaq climbed to a session high of 3,299.15, its highest since November 2000.

"After we broke above the high, we saw momentum accelerate as investors saw it as a release of resistance," said Katie Stockton, chief market technician at MKM Partners in Greenwich, Connecticut. "By definition, there is no more resistance for the S&P now that we're at new highs."

The CBOE Volatility index <.vix>, a measure of investor anxiety, fell 3.7 percent.

Stockton added that if the S&P 500 held above its old high, "the next target would be 1,780."

The Federal Reserve unexpectedly released the minutes from its most recent policy-setting meeting five hours early. The minutes showed a few policymakers expected to taper the pace of asset purchases by mid-year and end them later this year, while several others expected to slow the pace a bit later and halt the quantitative easing program by year-end.

Accommodative monetary policy from the Fed has been credited with helping to boost equity prices, and uncertainty surrounding the minutes briefly hit indexes in the premarket session, though they subsequently recovered.

"The only way quantitative easing will be tapered off is if the labor market shows noticeable improvement, and the most recent data doesn't show that," said Northern Trust's McDonald, referring to the March payroll report, which fell sharply short of expectations.

"QE will only be taken away when we're in a self-sustaining recovery. We're not there yet, which points to the Fed continuing to stimulate the economy."

Among the 5 percent of S&P 500 companies that have reported results so far, almost three-quarters have topped expectations, according to Thomson Reuters data.

But quarterly profits are expected to grow just 1.5 percent from a year ago, down from a January estimate of 4.3 percent. The lowered expectations could make it easier for companies to beat analysts' estimates and propel the market further.

Family Dollar Stores reported weaker-than-expected earnings, but rebounded off earlier declines to rise 1.1 percent to $60.44.

Hospital operator Health Management Associates Inc cut its outlook for 2013 earnings and revenue, citing weak patient-admission figures in the first quarter of the year. The stock plummeted 16.4 percent to $10.53.

The Pros And Cons Of Buying Commercial Property | Sonipa.net

TIP! Have property professionally inspected before you decide to put it up for sale. If there is anything wrong with your property, have it fixed right away.

So, you have made the decision and are now ready to get into commercial real estate? This article will address the many questions of where to begin and how to go about executing a successful transaction. The following tips are a useful guide to anyone interested in commercial real estate, and should help to see that your endeavor is worthwhile.

TIP! Make sure you are completely aware of the available square footage. Two different measurements are commonly used in commercial real estate.

If you want to have commercial real estate investments financed, then you need to prove your financial stability through both personal and business statements. Without financial statements, a bank cannot verify your income and will not allow you to borrow money.

TIP! See to it that you?re dealing with companies that care about their customers before you engage them in a commercial purchase. Otherwise, you could be in for additional money later on due to their mistakes which could have been avoided in the first place.

Engaging in a commercial transaction often takes more time, and is more difficult than simply buying a home. Yet, you should realize that the extra focus on, and length of, the process is essential in order to gain a better return on the investment.

TIP! Closely check the surrounding environment of your property. You may be liable for cleanup of a property that has been environmentally damaged from prior use.

You will probably have to put a lot of effort into your new investment at the beginning. First, you will need to search for an opportunity and purchase the property, as well as perform any repairs that are required. Don?t abandon you commercial real estate venture because it currently consumes so much of your time. The investment will be repaid as time goes on.

TIP! When you are looking for a new home for your growing business, you should pay close attention to the size of the property. Unless you plan to move a few years later, look for a property that is large enough for your business to grow.

If you are investing in commercial real estate, be aware that dramatic inflation over time can have a negative impact on your results. Many leases used to include clauses to protect investors from inflation that would adjust the lease according to the CPI (Consumer Price Index). However, this is no longer common practice, which strips away one form of protection.

TIP! Make sure you have sufficient utility to access on any commercial piece of real estate. You will need access to electricity, water, sewer and maybe gas in addition to any unique need that your business has.

Look for property that has more units. By having access to a large number of units, you will be able to more easily spread your earnings across all of your units. Many investors tend to shun property with fewer than 10 units, as most subscribe to the idea that there is a direct correlation between the number of units and the amount of money that can be made.

TIP! If your real estate deal includes inspections (and it always should), make sure to ask to see the credentials of all of the inspectors. This is especially true of people who work with insect or pest removal, as there are many non-accredited people working in these fields.

To make sure you are working with the right real estate broker, ask what they consider as a success or a failure. Also be sure to ask their method of measuring results. Understand exactly how they do business with their clients, and which strategies and methods they employ. Do not partner up with a broker who is completely the opposite to you in beliefs and the way matters are addressed.

TIP! When you are purchasing a piece of commercial real estate, know in advance what you plan to do with it. Are you going to use it to run your business, or are you going to lease it? Establish clear goals for your investment to narrow down your possibilities, as much as possible.

Properties are subject to a life-cycle similar to ours, where they will eventually parish if not ordered and maintained. You could make an avoidable error by buying a property that needs a lot of upkeep in the future. Your building may need a new roof, or updates to the plumbing or electrical systems. Every building goes through a phase like this, but some do more than others. Estimate the cost of repairs over the years, and plan for them.

TIP! It is essential that you become aware of any environmental issues associated with properties you are considering. You don?t want to start off with any problems that could?ve been prevented.

Be sure to only focus on one investment at a time. You will get better results if you stick to a single type of investment rather than doing land leasing, apartments, and offices all at once. Each kind demands and is worthy of your complete and focused attention. Master one type of investment at a time. Mediocre profits from several types of investments aren?t worth the effort, but major profits from one type of investment is.

TIP! If you plan to rent out a commercial property, you should do all you can to make sure they stay occupied. When you have an open space, you have to shell out the money to keep it looking great and running well.

Before formally making an offer, you must first locate a suitable lender. Communicate with everyone in your network including friends and fellow investors to come up with a brief list of the preferred lenders in your region. Before you even embark on a course to buy commercial real estate, do some research and choose the one lender that can meet your needs. Taking any time needed to line up things properly can make the difference in loan qualification.

TIP! Negotiating is essential. Make it clear that you wish to be heard and refuse to accept an unfair price.

Before you jump into a commercial real estate deal, you want to get a lay of the land first. This means considering and examining the general income levels in the area, how high or low unemployment rates are, and looking at the hiring practices of employers within the vicinity of where you intend to invest. If the building is near certain specific buildings, including hospitals, universities, or large companies, you might be able to sell it faster and for more money.

TIP! As you comb through possible brokers, search for those who have extensive experience in commercial markets. Make sure they are specializing in the desired area that you?re selling or buying in.

You need to think over the community any commercial property is in before you commit to it. If you are buying the property in a more expensive neighborhood your business will most likely be a lot more successful, people there have more to spend. If your business services will do better in a poor neighborhood, buy property there!

Don?t become greedy and over-inflate your real estate asking price. Market conditions can vary greatly; therefore, an appraisal may not be the best indicator of true market value.

TIP! Get a site checklist if you are viewing more than one property. Accept the proposal responses during the first round, but before going further, notify all the property owners involved.

Be aware of the potential tax benefits of investing in commercial property. Not only are there interest deductions, but also depreciation benefits to be aware of. ?Phantom income? is when an income is taxed but never received as cash, by the investors. It is important to know about this kind of income prior to investing.

Verify that the pro forma and the rent roll match the terms. If you concentrate on these points, you can find an issue with the property.

TIP! Bigger is better in commercial realty investments. If you were considering purchasing a property with a dozen units, consider the fact that managing twenty is probably just as easy.

Take photographs of the property. Your pictures should portray any damage or defect in the property. Common things you should look for include any cracks or holes in walls, and damages to the carpeting.

TIP! Query a real estate firm about their practices and sources of income over the past year. Honest brokers will be open about this, so you can tell if your interests will be at odds.

Standard release forms are not something you should rush to sign. Sometimes, a long lease contains not only standard lease clauses, but extra agreements that the real estate company sneaked into the lease without discussing with you. Always read any commercial lease before you sign it. Be aware of what you?re agreeing to and don?t sign the lease if anything makes you uncomfortable. Taking the extra time to read through your lease now helps you avoid problems later.

TIP! Figure pest control into your rented or leased commercial real estate property costs. Look over your rental or lease agreement, and know if you are covered, especially if you live in an area with known infestations.

Now, you will now be more prepared when you are dealing with commercial real estate. You thought that you were ready before, well look at you, now! This article probably gave you some ideas that you can use to invest in commercial real estate and make profits, doing so.

Whenever you are getting into something new, you?ve got to learn as much as you can on the subject. You need to learn and understand what you?re doing if you want to be successful with the subject of why you need to diversify your stock portfolio today. Take your newly gained knowledge, and move forward on the path to success.

So your website is beautifully written, the keywords are all in place and everything seems just fine. But hang on, half or more of potential customers will probably never find you ? and many of those that do could find your web copywriting baffling, unappealing or even offensive.

How come?

Well, it?s not called the World Wide Web for nothing. Like any web, it can act as a trap for the unwary. And a web that stretches all across the world is going to contain a great many linguistic and cultural pitfalls.

To start with, there?s really no such thing as Standard English. Standard American English, yes. Standard British English, of course. But for once, Oscar Wilde wasn?t exaggerating when he said that we?re two countries separated by a common language. And it can make a big difference to your web copywriting.

Here?s an example. If you?re selling a product that almost anyone anywhere in the world could want, like specialist jewelry, then you write your site with appropriate keywords ? ?custom-made jewelry?, ?handmade silver jewelry? or whatever. However, you should consider also doing those same keywords but spelling ?jewelry? as ?jewellery?. That way you won?t miss out on more than half of the English speaking world ? those who don?t use American spellings.

But even if you?re savvy about US and UK spelling, you?d be amazed at how many other potential differences there are out there. You can easily see this for yourself if you have a recent version of Microsoft Word on your computer.

Simply go to their language options (Click on Tools, then Language, then Set Language). They?ll do a spelling and grammar check on your document in no fewer than eighteen different variants of English. They list everything from Australian English to Zimbabwean English. Not only do they have Caribbean English, they have Trinidad & Tobago English (those countries being but a tiny part of the Caribbean).

How on earth do you cover them all? The answer is that you don?t. Not all of them. But if you?re an American site it?s worth remembering that between them, countries like the UK, India, South Africa, Australia and much of the Caribbean can add up to a great many potential customers. In numbers, at least, a lot more than those who live in the States. And that?s not even counting Canada, where the words and phrases they use can at times baffle Americans and British alike.

Remember too that many, if not most, people learning English for the first time learn British English. So you could be missing a lot of searchers if you?re not covering at least some of the main bases with your keywords. It?s true that search engines are getting better at recognising different forms of the same word, but they still have a long way to go.

If you?re serious about marketing across frontiers, it?s also worth taking cultural differences into account on the web. Copywriting styles that go down a treat in New England can sink like a lead balloon in the old country. To oversimplify, Americans want to be sold to, but the British want to be seduced. We prefer reason, politeness and avoidance of excessive claims ? factors that will probably leave the average American (or German) consumer cold.

But there?s much more to it than that. In most western cultures, the individual is all; in others such as China, the community or group is much more important. In the same way, some cultures prefer predictability and order, others emphasise risk-taking. Your web copywriting will need to reflect that.

Humor can work in both the US and the UK, but in very different ways, so it?s a tactic to be careful with. Note the American spelling of humor ? in the UK, it?s simply seen as an American spelling. But write it as ?humour? for an American audience and they?ll most likely think it?s a typo. Not good for your credibility if you?re a British site trying to market across the Atlantic.

The same goes for common words like ?centre? and ?colour? and all those words which the Americans spell with a ?z? and the British spell with an ?s? like economise, realise and sympathise. (And note that in a list of three items like that, the British don?t put a comma after the ?and?.)

As for vocabulary, there are the well-known words like ?fanny?, ?rubber? and ?bang? that will be innocuous in one country and potentially offensive in another. (As a young innocent travelling round the States many years ago, I once tried to cadge a cigarette by asking if I could bum a fag. Not a question I ever asked again.)

But many, many other words or phrases can have unintended effects. I remember reducing an American girlfriend to hysterics when I talked about ?paddling in the sea? (that?s walking with your feet in the water, in case you were wondering). And just last summer I completely baffled the guy in a Canadian fishing tackle shop by forgetting where I was and asking for a wire trace. I meant metal leaders for lures; he thought I was doing covert surveillance.

Never mind regular words, just the sounds can differ. Take something as mundane as a dog bark. It?s ?woof woof?, right? Yes, unless you?re in Italy, where it?s ?bau-bau?, or Austria where it?s ?wuff-wuff?. And you?ve got to love Rumanian dogs: they go ?ham-ham?. It?s the same with cats ? there are at least half a dozen ways of spelling ?meow?, depending on the country.

Even the length of the text can catch you out. Take that beautiful piece of text that fits so well between those two pictures on your product page ? if it?s going to be translated into German or Norwegian, you?re going to need up to a third more space.

In other words, there are innumerable hazards out there. And it?s all worth considering if you?re serious about marketing worldwide, and you have a webpage, a section or even a separate site for potential customers abroad that you want to optimize (or is that optimise?)

Burglars steal Vudu account IDs, passwords - Technology on ...

Streaming video provider Vudu announced that a break-in March 24 resulted in the theft of hard drives containing customer information, including names, email addresses, postal addresses, phone numbers, account activity, dates of birth and the last four digits of some credit card numbers.

According to Vudu, full credit card numbers were not stolen and that user passwords were encrypted. However, Vudu provided no details on the type of encryption used and whether it could be easily broken.

A statement from Vudu was not encouraging, "We believe it would be difficult to break the password encryption, but we can't rule out that possibility given the circumstances of this theft."

Therefore, all Vudu users should immediately change their passwords on any other sites on that use the same password as your Vudu account. Also, because emails addresses and other personal information were stolen, Vudu customers should be extremely cautious of phishing emails requesting passwords or other personal or financial information.

To help assist with future problems related to the data theft, Vudu ? which was bought by Walmart in 2010 ? has arranged for all customers to receive one year of identity protection services from AllClearID. Enrollment is not required. AllClear services can be accessed, if needed, from your Account Information page on the Vudu site.

Crashing continents caused deadly Iran earthquake

NASA Earth Observatory

The Zagros Mountains mark the boundary between two colliding continental plates.

By Becky Oskin
LiveScience

Crashing continents caused Tuesday's?deadly earthquake in Iran, which killed at least 20 people, according to news reports.

See more NBC News coverage see "Devastating" quake strikes near Iran nuclear plant

The magnitude-6.3 Iran earthquakehit in the southern Zagros Mountains, a stunning range that marks the boundary between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates, said Bill Barnhart, a research geophysicist at the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Denver office. The Arabian plate is grinding northward at about 0.4 inches (10 millimeters) a year, pushing the boot-shaped Arabian peninsula into the Eurasian plate, which covers most of Europe and Asia.

Just like the Himalaya Mountains, whose grand height and complex tectonics reflect the impact between the Indian and Eurasian plates, the Zagros Mountainsare a mix of different earthquake fault styles, Barnhart told OurAmazingPlanet.

Today?s quake was a thrust fault earthquake, meaning the ground on one side of the fault moved vertically up and over the other side, shortening the distance between the two sides. The epicenter was 55 miles (89 kilometers) southeast of Bushehr, the city where Iran's only nuclear power stationis located. The quake originated 6.2 miles (10 km) below the Earth's surface and struck at 4:22 p.m. local time (7:52 a.m. EDT), the USGS reported.

NASA Earth Observatory

In Iran's Zagros Mountains, salt layers have pushed through overlying rock, flowing like glaciers.

The magnitude-6.3 earthquake was not unusual for southwestern Iran. Thanks to the region's long historical record, scientists know temblors along the plate boundary typically range from magnitude 5.5 to 6.3, Barnhart said. And small earthquakes ranging from magnitude 4 to magnitude 5 frequently shake the region. "Earthquakes are very, very common here," he said. [Video: What Does Earthquake Magnitude Mean?]

But poor construction means these magnitude 6 quakes are often very destructive. "When these moderate earthquakes happen close to cities, they're not prepared for this level of shaking. That's why Bam was so destructive and deadly," Barnhart said, referring to the huge earthquake that struck the historic city in 2003.

In 2003, some 26,000 people were killed by a 6.6 magnitude quake that flattened Bam, located about 400 miles (650 km) east of today's earthquake. The Bam earthquake was a strike-slip, meaning the ground on either side of the faults moved mostly horizontally, as California's San Andreas fault does.

The Zagros Mountains are known for their unusual rock formations, including ancient salt layers that formed in the Precambrian Era, before complex life appeared in Earth's fossil record. As the tectonic plates have slammed into each other, contorting the mountains, the salt layers have pushed to the surface like toothpaste from a tube, forming salt domes and salt glaciers called namakiers.

Migraine triggers tricky to pinpoint

Monday, April 8, 2013

Women often point to stress, hormones, alcohol, or even the weather as possible triggers for their migraines. But a new study from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center found that it is nearly impossible for patients to determine the true cause of their migraine episodes without undergoing formal experiments.

The majority of migraine sufferers try to figure out for themselves what causes their headaches based on real world conditions, said lead author Timothy T. Houle, Ph.D, associate professor of anesthesia and neurology at Wake Forest Baptist.

"But our research shows this is a flawed approach for several reasons," he said. "Correctly identifying triggers allows patients to avoid or manage them in an attempt to prevent future headaches. However, daily fluctuations of variables ? such as weather, diet, hormone levels, sleep, physical activity and stress ? appear to be enough to prevent the perfect conditions necessary for determining triggers."

For example, said Houle, the simple act of drinking a glass of wine one day and not on the next could be complicated by inconsistencies in other factors. Similarly, a patient may drink wine for several days, but adding cheese to the mix one day could further skew results. In fact, a valid self-evaluation requires such perfect conditions that only occur about once every two years, he said.

"Many patients live in fear of the unpredictability of headache pain. As a result, they often restrict their daily lives to prepare for the eventuality of the next attack that may leave them bedridden and temporarily disabled," Houle said. "They may even engage in medication-use strategies that inadvertently worsen their headaches. The goal of this research is to better understand what conditions must be true for an individual headache sufferer to conclude that something causes their headaches."

Houle and co-author Dana P. Turner, M.S.P.H., also of the Wake Forest Baptist anesthesiology department, have published two related papers on the subject in the journal Headache, which were published online ahead of print this month.

For the study, nine women who had regular menstrual cycles and were diagnosed with migraine either with or without aura provided data for three months by completing a daily diary and tracking stress with the Daily Stress Inventory, a self-administered questionnaire to measure the number and impact of common stressors experienced in everyday life. Morning urine was also collected daily for hormone level testing. Houle and Turner also reviewed three years worth of weather data from a local weather station.

Because of the difficulty in recreating identical conditions each time a patient evaluates a potential trigger, determining triggers proves difficult even for physicians, said Turner. "People who try to figure out their own triggers probably don't have enough information to truly know what causes their headaches," she said. "They need more formal experiments and should work with their doctors to devise a formal experiment for testing triggers."
